Born as Pia Alonso Wurtzbach on September 24, 1989, she is a Filipina-German beauty pageant winner, model and actress who had won the Miss Universe 2015 pageant on December 20, 2015. She was formerly known in the Philippine entertainment and modelling world as Pia Romero. She was the third Miss Universe pageant winner and has served as a UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador for Asia & Pacific since 2016. Prior to her, Gloria Diaz had won the Miss Universe title in 1969 and Margarita Moran in 1973.
Wurtzbach was born in Stuttgart, Germany. Her father was German and her mother was a Filipina. As per the naming ritual in Philippines, her middle name ‘Alonzo’ is her mother’s maiden name. However, they settled in Iligan, Philippines and later moved to Cagayan de Oro in the Northern Mindanao region of her country. She attended kindergarten at Kong Hua School and primary school at Corpus Christi School. Her parents separated when she was 9 and she became the main breadwinner for the family by starting a career in modelling and acting. She later spent many years in England. She completed her secondary education at ABS-CBN Distance Learning Center in Quezon City, Metro Manila and learned culinary arts at the Center for Asian Culinary Studies, San Juan, Metro Manila. Wurtzbach can fluently speak Cebuano, English and Filipino and can also speak basic German. She said about that her German was “enough to get myself a bratwurst.”
Wurtzbach has made a name as a professional model, actress, host and TV personality. She first started acting when she was four-years-old under the name Pia Romero. She was managed by ABS-CBN Corporation’s talent agency named Star Magic and was included on the Star Circle Batch 11. Her TV credits include the teen-oriented series K2BU, a concert variety program ASAP, romantic anthology Your Song, sitcom Bora and a drama series Sa Pilling Mo. She also worked in films such as Kung Ako Na Lang Sana (2003), All My Life (2004), and All About Love (2006). She later became a stylist, makeup artist and beauty writer for Philippine Daily Inquirer’s 2bU segment. She temporarily quit showbiz to participate in the Miss Universe pageant.
However, she returned to ABS-CBN in October 2017 which also happened to be her return to showbiz.
