Born on 23 February 1976, Kelly Macdonald is a Scottish actress renowned for appearing in films like Trainspotting (1996), Gosford Park (2001), Intermission (2003), Nanny McPhee (2005), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (2011) and Brave (2012). For the 2005 TV film The Girl in the Café, she received a Golden Globe nomination and won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie. In the year 2003, she appeared in a highly acclaimed BBC miniseries State of Play as journalist Della Smith.
She received a BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role nomination in 2007 for No Country for Old Men. She starred for five seasons in the HBO series Boardwalk Empire (2010-2014) where she appeared as Margaret Thompson and was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2011 for the role.
Macdonald was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and as a five-year-old she moved to Aberdeen. Her mother worked as a garment industry sales executive. Macdonald studied at the Eastwood High School from 1987 to 1993. Macdonald’s career started as a barmaid in Glasgow. She found out about a casting session for Trainspotting and successfully auditioned for the role of Diane, an underage seductress to Ewan McGregor’s Renton. She also appeared as Mary O’Neary in Two Family House, and as an actress playing Peter Pan in Finding Neverland. She played significant roles in British period film Gosford Park where she appeared as an aristocrat’s maid, and as Deirdre in Intermission. (2003).
Macdonald played the starring role of maid Evangeline in the 2005 movie Nanny McPhee and later played supporting roles in A Cock and Bull Story (2006) and the Academy Award winning Coen brothers film No Country for Old Men (2007), the film that she received a BAFTA Award for Best Actress In a Supporting Role nomination.
In the year 2011, she was seen as the “Grey Lady” (Helena Ravenclaw) in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, the last film from the Harry Potter film franchise.
Macdonald married musician Dougie Payne, bassist of rock band Travis in August 2003. They have two children and returned to Glasgow in 2014 after having lived in London and New York City. They separated in 2017.
