Leigh Lezark, Geordon Nicol and Greg Krelenstein met at college and in the year 2003, they came together to form The Misshapes. Starting from 2004, the trio gathered a huge fan following after they brought the “Misshapes Dance Party” to downtown New York City. The name was picked from a Pulp song “Mis-Shapes.” The party was initially hosted at 21 South Avenue, South in the West Village of New York City. Geordon and Leigh had to lie about their ages and produce fake resumes to get access to the place back then.
Aided by the internet, the party became extremely popular in the fashion, music and art industry. In the year 2005, after a performance by Madonna and Stuart Price, Misshapes had to deal with repeated capacity issues and the party shifted to SoHo Club, Don Hill’s. At the new location, the event and the DJs had even more success. The wealthy kids and celebrities from downtown partied together. Creative, do it yourself type flyers were made and distributed. A major part of the Misshapes party happens to be its website, Misshapes.com. Early users of social media, the Misshapers shared weekly photos of the party and also the portraits clicked against a white wall.
The list of DJ’s and Live performers included names like Agyness Deyn, Alexandre Herchocovitch, Arcade Fire, Bloc Party, Cassie, Chromeo, Cory Kennedy, David Byrne, Dash Snow, Dev Hynes, The Drums, Felix da Housecat, Franz Ferdinand, Gareth Pugh, Gemma Ward, The Gossip, Hedi Slimane, Henry Holland , The Horrors, Hot Hot Seat, Interpol, James Tha, Jarvis Cocker, Jeremy Scott, Junior Sanchez, Junior Senior, Kelis, Kelly Osbourne, The Killers, Klaxons, Lady Sovereign, Ladytron, Lady Miss Kier, Le Tigre, Lily Donaldson, M.I.A., Madonna, MSTRKRFT, Nan Golden, Patrick Wolf and a lot of others.
The party ran for five years, and then the trio decided to discontinue the weekly party, but, keep producing special Misshapes events in different locations.
They also ventured into publishing with the release of their self-titled stylebook. This book features nearly 300 pages of fashion portraits and more than 2500 photographs. The book’s intro was written by “Vogue” magazine and Vogue.com editor Sally Singer.
In the year 2008, the Misshapes started designing the soundtracks to the first fashion shows of the London based designer Henry Holland. They have also done collaborations with brands such as Chanel, Harry Winston, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Moet & Chandon, and Visionaire to install soundtracks in galleries, museums, public spaces and art centers.
