In 2002, her friends recommended that she audition for American Idol. Little did she know that she will end up as the winner. Right after the announcement, she was signed to a record deal by Simon Fuller, the creator of American Idol, and Clive Davis, her would-be producer. She released Before Your Love/A Moment Like This on September 17, 2002. This single eventually landed on the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100.
Kelly already recorded eight albums, including her debut Thankful, which was released in 2003. Her other albums were entitled Breakaway, All I Ever Wanted, My December, Wrapped in Red, Stronger, Piece by Piece, and Meaning of Life. She has also appeared in several movies, including Issues 101, From Justin to Kelly, Broke, The Star, Ugly Dolls, and Trolls World Tour. She had many television guesting.

Kelly is married to Brandon Blackstock, who is her current manager. Their two kids are named River Rose and Remington Alexander. Brandon also has two children from a previous marriage.
