Born as Joan Marie Larkin on September 22, 1958 at Lankenau Hospital in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, she is an American rock singer, songwriter, composer, musician, record producer and occasional actress. Joan Marie Larkin is the oldest of three children. Her father was an insurance salesman and her mother worked as a secretary. Her family was Protestant and she attended church, but, they were not overly religious. In the year 1967, her family relocated to Rockville, Maryland where she attended the Randolph Junior High and Wheaton High School. Jett got her first guitar when she was 14, and took some guitar lessons, but, soon quit because the instructor kept trying to make her learn folk songs. Her family then moved to West Covina, California in Los Angeles County, and it gave Jett the opportunity to go after her musical dreams. Soon after moving to Los Angeles, her parents got divorced and she changed her name to Joan Jett, taking her mother’s maiden name to be her professional and legal name.

Jett is renowned for her work as the frontwoman of her band, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, and for previously founding and performing with the Runaways, which had recorded and released the hit song “Cherry Bomb.” The Blackhearts’ version of the song “I love Rock n Roll” remained at the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for seven weeks in 1982. Jett’s other famous hits include, “Bad Reputation”, “Crimson and Clover,” “Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)” “Light of Day”, “I Hate Myself for Loving You”, and “Dirty Deeds.”

Jett is credited to have a mezzo soprano vocal range. She also has three platinum or gold certified albums and has been a feminist icon throughout her career. She has been named as the Queen of Rock n Roll and the Godmother of Punk. In the year 2015, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Jett lived in Long Beach, New York since the late 1970s before she relocated to Rockville Centre, New Year.

Jett has steadily declined to comment whether she is a lesbian or bisexual. During an interview in 1994 with Out magazine, she stated, “I’m not saying no, I’m not saying yes. I’m saying believe what you want. Assume away – go ahead.” In the year 2006, she also responded to the rumors about her being an open lesbian by saying, “I never made any kind of statement about my personal life on any level, I never made any proclamations. So I don’t know where people are getting that from.”

Jett first turned a vegetarian because of her love for animals. She said, “I am a vegetarian. So I avoid contributing to the major environmental damage that the meat industry creates. I hope that soon we can make sure that everything we do is Earth-friendly.”
