Born on October 6, 2000, Jazz Jennings is an American YouTube personality, spokesmodel, TV personality and LGBT rights activist. Jennings was born in South Florida to parents Greg and Jeanette. The family is Jewish, and they have picked Jennings as a pseudonym since their last name is “a very Jewish, long last name.” Upon her birth, her parents named her Jaron, a hybrid of Jordan and Aaron. Jennings was identified as a male upon birth. However, she was diagnosed with gender dysphoria when she was five and she became one of the youngest people ever to be documented as transgender. As soon as Jennings started speaking, she made it clear that she was a female and although her parents dressed her in gender neutral clothing, she wanted to be dressed in feminine clothing.
Jennings is now a transgender woman, and is renowned fo being one of the youngest people to be publicly identified as transgender and for the youngest ever national transgender figure. Jennings came to national limelight in 2007 when she appeared on an interview with Barbara Walters that was aired on 20/20 and it led to other high-profile interviews and appearances. Christine Connelly, one of the members of the board of directors for the Boston Alliance of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Youth, stated: “She was the first young person who picked up the national spotlight, went on TV and was able to articulate her perspective and point of view with such innocence.” Her parents observed that Jennings was clear on being a female as soon as she was able to speak.
Jennings is an honorary co-founder of the TransKids Purple Rainbow Foundation, which was founded by her and her parents in 2007 to assist transgender youth. In the year 2013, she founded Purple Rainbow Tails, a company where she creates rubber mermaid tails to raise funds for transgender children.
Jennings hosts a series of YouTube videos based on her life, titled “I Am Jazz” which maker her one of the youngest trans women in history to speak out on issues in public. Jennings stars in a TLC reality TV series, I Am Jazz which is based on her life with her family as a teenager and as a transgender youth. The series premiered on July 15, 2015.
