Born on January 12, 1974 as Melanie Jayne Chisholm, she is professionally known as Melanie C. or Mel C., and is an English singer, songwriter, entrepreneur, actress and TV personality. She is among the five members of the Spice Girls, where she was known as Sporty Spice. Since 1996, Chisholm has sold over 105 million records, out of which 85 million copies were with the group and 20 million solo ablums, singles and collaborations, and she has earned more than 325 worldwide certifications (included a number of diamonds) out of which she earned 40 silver, gold and platinum certifications as a solo artist.
She has co-written 11 UK number 1s which are more than any other female artis in the charts’ history, and is the only female performer to have reached the top of the charts as a solo artist, as part of a duo, as part of a quartet and a quintet. With 12 UK Number 1 singles, she is the second female artist ever and the first British female artist who has maximum singles at number 1 in the UK and a total of 14 songs that reached the number 1 in Britain. Her work has made her receive a number of awards and nominations, including a Guinness Book mention, three World Music Awards, five Brit Awards from 10 nominations, three American Music Awards, four Billboard Music Awards from six nominations, eight Billboard special awards, three MTV Europe Music Awards from seven nominations, one MTV Video Music Awards from two nomination, ten ASCAP awards, one Juno Award from two nominations, and four Echo Awards nominations.
She started as a solo artist in late 1998 with Canadian rock singer Bryan Adams in the global hit “When You’re Gone.” Her solo debut album Northern Star was released in 1999 and it reached number 1 in Sweden and number 4 on the UK Albums Chart. It was certified internationally and received seven platinum and three gold certifications, including a triple-Platinum by the British Phonographic Industry, and sold over 4 million copies worldwide, and sold more than 4 million copies. It became the best-selling solo album of any Spice Girls member.
Chisholm’s second album Reason came out in March 2003 and sold over 500,000 copies. In 2004, Chisholm moved away from Virgin and founded her own record label Red Girl Records. Her third album, Beautiful Intentions came out in April 2005. Her fourth studio album, This Time, was released in April 2007, and it was certified gold in Switzerland. In December of that year, Chisholm once again teamed up with Spice Girls to release a greatest hits album backed by a world tour. She released her fifth solo album, The Sea on September 2, 2011, and her first EP The Night on May 13, 2012. Her sixth studio album Stages came out in 2012 and the seventh, Version of Me in 2016.
