Born as Gisele Caroline Bundchen on 20 July 1980 in Horizontina or in Tres de Maio, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, she is a Brazilian model and actress. She was raised with five sisters – Raquel, Graziela, Gabriela, Rafaela and her fraternal twin, Patricia, her junior by five minutes. Apart from Portugese, Gisele speaks English, Italian, Spanish and some French, and learned German at school, but, has mentioned that “… being out of touch with the language for such a long time. I unfortunately forgot it.”
Bundchen aspired to be a volleyball player, but, joined a modelling course with her sisters Patricia and Gabriela upon their mother’s insistence in 1993. The following year, Bundchen was spotted by the Elite Modeling Agency at a shopping mall in Sao Paulo while she was on a school excursion. She was later chosen for a national contest: Elite Look of the Year, wherein she was placed second. Bundchen was 14 when she relocated to Sao Paulo to launch her modelling career. In the year 1996, Bundchen got her first New York City break at Fashion Week.
Since 2004, Bundchen is among the top models in the world and as of 2007, she was the 16 wealthiest woman in the entertainment industry. In the year 2012, she was placed first on the Forbes top-earning models list. In the year 2014, she was placed as the 89th Most Powerful Woman in the World by Forbes.
In the late 1990s, Bundchen was the first in a series of Brazilians models to become successful internationally. In the year 1999, Vogue observed “The Return of the Sexy Model” and she was credited with ending the “heroin chic” era of modelling. Bundchen was among the Victoria’s Secret Angels from 2000 until mid-2007. Bundchen was the pioneer of the “horse walk”, a stomping movement that is seen when a model picks her knees up high and kicks her feet out in front. In an interview in 2007 with Vogue, Claudia Schiffer mentioned that Bundchen is the only surviving supermodel. Bundchen entered the world of acting when she played a supporting role in Taxi (2004) for which she got nominated at the Teen Choice Awards for Choice Movie Breakout Performance, and for Choice Movie Bad Guy. Bundchen played a supporting role in The Devil Wears Prada (2006) and from 2010 to 2011, she was the executive producer of an educational environmental cartoon, Gisele & the Green Team.
Bundchen married the New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady in 2009. She also supports a number of charities such as Save the Children, Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders, and also dedicates time to environmental causes. She is the Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Environment Programme.
