Born as Maria Jose de Pablo Fernandez, she is a Chilean-American actress renowned as Cote de Pablo. According to Latinos Post, she and her family moved from Chile to Miami, Florida, when she was ten years of age. Since the kids at her school couldn’t pronounce her name, she changed it to “Cote” which is a common nickname in Chile.
After moving to America, she didn’t know much English and learning a new language at such a young age was not easy, but, there was a teacher who helped de Pablo find her way. During an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman via YouTube, she stated, “and so I remember in 5th grade, I had a teacher… who was wonderful and he was an older man. And the only thing I knew really was ‘run.’ I knew what that meant. And so he put me into the track and field and so he got me starting to run and all that stuff, and before I knew it, I was a little track and field star. And I remember, he would say in the middle of a competition, he would scream and get very red and scream, ‘Cote, run!’ and that’s all I knew.”
She was quite young when she decided that she wanted to become a successful actress. She was 15 when she landed her first TV role. However, she didn’t instantly make it big. In fact, there was a time when she wanted to be a secretary. She told TV Guide, “I, believe it or not, wanted to be a secretary, much like Maggie Gyllenhaal in The Secretary.” Before attending the university, she was the host of a Latin-American talk show Control alongside Carlos Ponce. After graduating from Carnegie Mellon University (where she studied music and theater), she moved to New York City to find work. There, she used to work as a waitress at an Indian restaurant in Manhattan without knowing that she was soon going to be a big name.
Since she had studied musical theater in high school, so it was obvious that she continued on the same path. She received an offer to do The Mambo Kings Broadway show and at the same time, she also received an opportunity to appear in NCIS. She was confused, but, after the Broadway show was cancelled, she took the NCIS role. She still wishes to return to stage some day. She once said, “It’s something still pending that I want to do.”
Back in 2000, Cote hit off with Diego Serrano, famous for appearing on the Fox series Time of Your Life. They dated for fifteen years. Serrano used to tell Cote, “live a little.” During an interview, Cote talked about their relationship, “I’ll have chicken with broccoli and he’s like, “What about the chocolate cake?” If it weren’t for him, I’d be the most boring person in Los Angeles.” Sadly, after the fifteen years of togetherness, they split and the reason behind their breakup remains unknown.
In today’s age where everyone is present on multiple social media platforms, Cote is an aberration. She is a very private person and doesn’t like to share her life online. In fact, the former NCIS heart-throb doesn’t use social media at all.
She has come a long way since her fifteen-year-old self who co-hosted “Control” alongside Carlos Ponce. She is a much loved actress and singer now. Her albums have sold well in the United States and also internationally.
