Born on November 12th, 1982, in Brooklyn, New York, United States of America, Anne Jacqueline Hathaway is a versatile American actress known for her diverse roles, ranging from fantasies to adult-oriented dramas and comedies. When she was six years old, her family moved to Millburn, a New Jersey suburb. Her father, Gerald, worked as a lawyer, while her mother, Kate McCauley, pursued a career as a stage actress.
At a young age, Anne Hathaway accompanied her mother during a production of the musical Les Misérables, which sparked her interest in pursuing a career in the theater. She studied with New York’s renowned Barrow Group and, at the age of 16, landed her first TV role on the family drama Get Real during 1999-2000. After graduating from high school in 2000, Anne Hathaway began to focus on her film career.
Her breakthrough on the big screen came with The Princess Diaries in 2001, where she portrayed Mia Thermopolis, a clumsy teenager who discovers she is heir to a royal throne. She also starred in the sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement in 2004, and played a significant role in Ella Enchanted.
Seeking more mature roles and avoiding being typecast, Anne Hathaway found herself in Ang Lee’s critically acclaimed Brokeback Mountain in 2005, playing the wife of a cowboy, portrayed by Jake Gyllenhaal, who is secretly in love with another man, played by Heath Ledger. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture.
In 2006, Anne Hathaway starred alongside Meryl Streep in the highly successful film, The Devil Wears Prada. Her other notable performances include playing the lead role in Becoming Jane in 2007, a fictionalized account of author Jane Austen’s life, and her portrayal of Kym, a recovering drug addict, in Rachel Getting Married in 2008, for which she earned her first Academy Award nomination.
Expanding her range further, Anne Hathaway appeared in the romantic comedies Bride Wars in 2009 and Valentine’s Day in 2010. She returned to her fantasy roots in 2010, playing the White Queen in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland and taking on the role of a free-spirited woman struggling with Parkinson’s disease in the romance Love and Other Drugs. The following year, she starred in the romantic drama One Day.
