Born on November 19, 1959 as Allison Brooks Janney, she is an American actress. Janney has been a very prolific actress and has won a number of awards such as an Oscar, seven Primetime Emmy Awards, a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe Award and seven Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Janney was born in Boston, Massachussets and raised in Dayton, Ohio. She won a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in the summer of 1984 after having graduated from Kenyon College. Many years of minor or uncredited movie and TV roles followed before Janney landed a breakthrough role as C.J. Cregg in NBC political drama The West Wing (1999-2006) and she won four Primetime Emmy Awards for it. The character was incredibly popular during the show’s running and was later listed among one of the greatest female characters on American TV. In the year 2014, she won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in Drama Series for the role of Margaret Scully on the Showtime period drama Masters of Sex. Since the year 2013, she has featured as a cynical addict on the path to recovery in a CBS sitcom Mom. She was highly acclaimed for her performance on the show and was nominated for Primetime Emmy Award on five consecutive occasions, winning two of the Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
Janney debuted as a professional stage actress on an Off-Broadway production Ladies and then did a number of small roles in similar productions, before debuting on the Broadway in the 1996 revival of Present Laughter. She won the Drama Desk Awards and was nominated for Tony Awards for her performances in the 1997 Broadway revival of A View from The Bridge and the 2009 original Broadway production of a musical 9 to 5.
