Born as Francine Joy Drescher on September 30, 1957, she is an American actress, comedian, writer and activist. Drescher was born in Kew Gardens Hills, New York. She had attended Hillcrest High School in Jamaica, Queens where she met her future husband Peter Marc Jacobson, whom she married I the year 1978 when she was 21 years old. They divorced in 1999 after 21 years of marriage. Jacobson constantly supported Drescher in her show business career. He also wrote, directed and produced her signature TV series, The Nanny. Drescher graduated from Hillcrest High School in the year 1975 and then Drescher and Jacobson attended Queens College, City University of New York, but, left after a year because “all the acting classes were filled.” They later enrolled in a cosmetology school.
Drescher’s most famous performance was as Fran Fine in the hit TV show The Nanny (1993-1999) and for her nasal voice as well as heavy New York accent. Drescher made her big screen debut with a minor role in Saturday Night Fever (1977) and later appeared in American Hot Wax (1978), and Wes Cravan’s horror story Stranger in Our House (1978). During the 1980s, she became famous as a comedic actress in films like Gorp (1980), The Hollywood Knights (1980), Doctor Detroit (1983), This is Spinal Tap (1984) and UHF (1989). She also established a TV career with guest roles in various series. In 1993, she became widely famous as Fran Fine in her own sitcom show The Nanny, for which she received two Emmy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards nominations for Best Actress in a Comedy Television Series. She was further recognised for her work in Jack (1996), and The Beautician and the Beast (1997). She once again asserted her reputation of being a top sitcom star with Living With Fran (2005-2006) and cult classics Santa’s Slay (2005), Happily Divorced (2011-2013).
She is a uterine cancer survivor, and Drescher is a vocal healthcare advocate as well as LGBT rights activist. She is renowned for working as a Public Diplomacy Envoy for Women’s Health Issues for the U.S. State Department. She divorced her writer and producer Peter Marc Jacobson and is now living in Malibu, California.
On February 4, 2014, Drescher debuted on Broadway as Cinderella’s stepmother Madame.
