Margot Louise Hemingway (February 16, 1954 – July 1, 1996) was an American fashion model and actress renowned as Margaux Hemingway. Born as Margot Louise Hemingway in Portland, Oregon, she was the daughter of Byra Louise and Jack Hemingway (eldest son of writer Ernest Hemingway).
During her childhood, her family moved from Oregon to Cuba, where her famous grandfather used to live, and then to San Francisco and later to Idaho where they lived on her grandfather’s farm in Ketchum, next to Sun Valley.
They took family trips to Oregon in summers and she graduated from the Catlin Gabel School in Portland.
Margaux faced a number of disorders starting from her teenage days such as alcoholism, depression, bullmia, and epilepsy. She also suffered from dyslexia.
In the year 2013, her younger sister Mariel mentioned in a documentary Running From Crazy that both Margaux and her older sister Muffet had been sexually abused by their father. She earned fame as a supermodel in the mid-1970s and appeared on the covers of Cosmopolitan, Elite, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue and TIME. She landed a million-dollar contract for Faberge as the spokesmodel for Babe perfume. Her later years were impacted by scandalous reports of addiction and depression.
On July 1, 1996, Hemingway was found dead in her studio apartment in Santa Monica. While her body was found in a highly decomposed state, the autopsy and California death records mention it as her date of death.
She had overdosed on Phenobarbital as per the LA County Coroner’s toxicology report although the family found it difficult accepting that she had committed suicide. Mariel Hemingway’s husband told People Magazine in 1996 that “This was the best I’d seen Margaux in years. She had gotten herself back together.” Later in December 2005, Mariel appeared on an episode of Larry King Live and said that she had accepted her sister’s death as suicide.
