Shriya Saran Bhatnagar grew up in Haridwar. Her father worked at a power company, while her mother was a chemistry teacher. She grew up in one of the largest cities in India. As a young girl, she learned the Indian folk dance from her mother.
Saran majored in literature in a women’s college in Delhi. She joined several dance teams in college, where she would insert social problems in her dance routines.
Saran’s acting career began when she got invited for a music video shoot. Soon, a film company offered Saran a lead role in Ishtam. Before the movie got released, Saran got more film offers, including Nuvve Nuvve.
In the following year, Saran got her big break after starring in the comedy-drama film Santosham. Her performance earned a nomination as Best Actor-Female at the CinaMAA Awards. Saran’s appearance in the movie led her to get a foothold in the film industry.
From 2004 to 2007, Saran encountered a great career fall after receiving mixed reviews from her critics. However, Saran continued to appear in other films, such as Mazhai and Sivaji: The Boss, which used to be the most expensive Indian film.
In 2008, Saran landed on her American movie debut in the comedy-drama film, The Other End of the Line alongside Jesse Metcalfe. Variety magazine commented on Saran’s performance as a winning debut for the Indian star.
The succeeding years became one of Saran’s busiest after landing on several film projects. She starred in Kanthaswamy, where she earned a Vijay Awards nomination. She also starred in Cooking with Stela and Rowthiram.
One of her big breaks as an actress is in the family drama movie Manam in 2014. In the film, Saran received five acting awards. Currently, she is working on four upcoming films for 2020.
