Born as Robyn Rihanna Fenty on February 20, 1988 in St. Michael Parish, Barbados) and renowned as Rihanna, she is a Barbadian pop and R & B singer who became a global star in the early years of the 21st century. Fenty was raised in Barbados. As a child, she used to listen to Caribbean music like reggae and American hip-hop and R&B. She loved singing and won a high-school talent show where she presented a rendition of a Mariah Carey song. For her professional career, she picked up the stage name Rihanna.
Her debut was with the vibrant dancehall-inspired single “Pon de Replay” (2005), and Rihanna instantly became the favourite of international audience. The song’s success boosted sales for her debut album Music of the Sun (2005) which featured conventional R&B ballads alongside Caribbean style dance pop showcasing her melodious Barbadian accent. Rihanna soon came up with the album A Girl Like Me (2006), that featured the up-tempo club-focused song “S.O.S.” the song became Rihanna’s first Billboard singles chart number one song.
For her 2007 album, Good Girl Gone Bad, Rihanna decided to transform her youthful image. With the help of high-profile collaborators like Timbaland and Justin Timberlake, she discarded the tropical rhythms that had been a feature of her first two albums and recorded a collection of stylish R&B which showed her as a fiercely independent girl with a rebellious streak. She even sported a spiky asymmetrical hairstyle. The move paid rich dividends and the album sold several million copies globally. Its song “Umbrella” that had an introductory rap from Jay-Z became one of the biggest hits of the year and Rihanna won a Grammy Award for it.
Early in 2009, Rihanna was assaulted by her boyfriend and fellow R&B star Chris Brown in an incident that was much talked about in the media and gossip blogs. After their breakup, he was convicted of assault.
In early 2011, her sexually provocative song “S&M” became her 10th number on hit on the Billboard chart and she became the youngest artist ever to achieve the feat (23 years of age).
Rihanna has acted in the movies Battleship (2012) and This Is The End (2013). She gave voice to a leading character in an animated adventure titled Home (2015). Rihanna also appeared as a hacker in Ocean’s 8, a female-centric reboot of the Ocean’s Eleven franchise from the early 2000s.
After she collaborated on numerous cosmetic collections in early 2010s, Rihanna came out with her own line, Fenty Beauty in 2017. The brand was loved by fans and it was praised for being inclusive as it offered 40 different shades of foundation.
