Born as Claire Elise Boucher on March 17, 1988, she is a Canadian singer, songwriter, record producer and visual artist, better known as Grimes. She was born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. She has Quebecois and Ukrainian roots. She grew up Roman Catholic and attended a Catholic school. Her mother Sandy Garossino is a former Crown prosecutor and arts advocate. In the year 2006, Boucher moved from Vancouver to Montreal to attend the McGill University, but, left the school in 2011 before she could finish her degree.
As per the timestamps on her original MySpace page, Boucher had started writing music as Grimes in the year 2007. She got her performer name because back then MySpace allowed its artists to mention three musical genres. She listed grime for all three, without even knowing what grime music was. She is a self-taught musician and visual artist.
Grimes started releasing her music independently during the late 2000s, and released two albums titled Geidi Primes and halfaxa in 2010 on Arbutus Records. She later signed a deal with 4AD and shot to fame after her third album Visions released in 2012. She received the Juno Award for Electronic Album of the Year. Her fourth studio album Art Angels (2015) was highly acclaimed and a number of publications named it as the best album of the year. Her music integrates elements of various types such as dreampop, R & B, Electronic music and hip hop.
