Born on January 25, 1971 in New York City, Ana Ortiz is an American actress and singer. She studied ballet for eight years during her childhood, until the pain caused by dancing en pointe compelled her to choose a different artistic discipline. Ortiz graduated from University of the Arts, Philadelphia.
Shifting focus to singing, Ortiz attended the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, New York City and alter attended the University of the Arts befoe she debuted in a regional theater production of Dangerous Liaisons. She also appeared on stage as Chrissy in a European touring production of Hair, regional theater productions such as Dog Lady and the Cuban Swimmer and in a South Coast Repertory Theater’s production of References to Salvador Dali Make Me Hot. After she joined LAByrinth Theatre Company, she appeared Off-Broadway in Arabia, We’d All Be Kings, also co-starring Puerto Rican actress Liza Colon-Zayas, and was directed by Academy Award winning actor Phillip Seymour Hoffman and named among the 10-best plays of 1999 by the Time Out New York magazine.
Ortiz appeared in a number of TV shows such as NYPD Blue, Everybody Loves Raymond, Commander In Chief, ER, and The New Adventures of Old Christine. She played her first series regular role in a short-lived NBC comedy series Kristin (2001), opposite Kristin Chenoweth. She also starred in another short-lived sitcom titled A.U.S.A. in 2003 and later played recurring roles in the FX drama Over There and ABC series Boston Legal. She appeared as Hilda Suarez, the lead character’s sister in ABC comedy drama series Ugly Betty in 2006. She had auditioned for the role of Betty Suarez, but, America Ferrera bagged it instead. Ortiz stated in 2008,” I was super plain. I just put on some glasses and kept my hair kind of flat and layered on the clothing.” Describing her appearance while auditioning for the role, “I just wanted them to remember me, so that I could be involved in the future.”
She has also been a part of films like Labor Pains (2009) and Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son (2011), and starred in Little Girl Lost: The delimar Vera Story (2008). From 2013 to 2016, Ortiz starred as Marison Suarez in the Lifetime television comedy drama series Devious Maids for which she won the Imagen Award for Best Actress – Television.
